Unproven Stem-Cell Treatments Spur Research Group Guidelines

By Rob Waters, Mar. 20, 2008 (Bloomberg)- An international group of scientists is establishing guidelines for stem-cell therapies because clinics in China, Costa Rica and Barbados are using unproven treatments on sick patients.

``If you go online, you can find dozens of sites that offer unproved therapies,'' George Daley, a researcher with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Boston and president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, said at a press conference in Half Moon Bay, California...

MAP4343 receives orphan drug status

Mar. 18, 2008 (Checkbiotech.org)- Mapreg, a biotechnology company specialized in the development of novel drugs for the treatment of central nervous system diseases, announces today that the European Commission has granted its lead compound, MAP4343, orphan drug status for the treatment of spinal cord injury.
The company has entered the compound in the European Community register of orphan drugs. This decision follows a favorable opinion from the Orphan Drugs Committee of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA)...
